In the 1500's the Spanish Conquistadors, driven by their unquenchable lust for gold, went in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola. They had heard the native American tales of cities that were made of pure gold supposedly located in the area that is now New Mexico, not far from Santa Fe. For decades it was not unusual to see native Americans parading around in Spanish armour, having discovered the remains of a wayward explorer that one way or another met his demise. This is an image that attempts to bring that legend back to life, painted in a mixed media of laquer, acrylic and enamel on canvas.
